Adult Learn to Row Sessions
During the spring and summer months, Trentham Boat club normally aims to offer a few adult beginner courses. We welcome adults of every age, sex and fitness. Unlike some taster rowing courses, we don’t stop at the absolute basics but offer the chance to get a more in-depth feel of the sport. Beginner session involve focusing on the basic skills and techniques of rowing and building confidence. Improver sessions then move on to rowing in standard crew boats. All sessions are supported by coaches and more experienced club members.
UPDATE – August 2020…the ongoing impact of coronavirus on beginner courses at Trentham…
For various reasons, we had to make the difficult decision to put a pause on adult beginner courses in 2019. We didn’t just want to offer a “taste” and then let beginners drop. Rowing is quite a technical sport and takes quite a while even to get a grip of the basics. We needed to be sure of having the capacity to offer longer-term coaching, mentoring and support for our “newbies” after the course ended. Whilst we love to welcome new learners, this longer term commitment puts quite a lot of pressure on our volunteer coaches and experienced members.
The result of last year’s lack of courses? – we had lots of people on our waiting list for many months.
We had made plans to run several courses through 2020 and allocated places to people who’d waited longest on the list. But then the coronavirus pandemic happened. Whilst we are now back rowing on the water, in a limited way, it is highly unlikely that we will be able to offer beginner sessions until Spring 2021 at the earliest.
For that reason, we are sorry, we are not taking any more enquiries for the waiting list at this time.
- You must be able to swim at least 100 metres in light clothing
- That’s about it really!
No need for the figure hugging lycra as yet. Learning the basics of rowing is more mentally taxing than it is physically challenging, so wrap up warm (appropriate for the weather conditions) but avoid loose bulky jackets which will tend to get in the way. Ordinary trainers are fine.
The cost of our adult beginner sessions is currently £110, payable in advance. This includes 12 sessions, through the beginner and improver stages of the course.
And if you enjoy trying the sport we love…..
well, once you have done your beginner & improver sessions – we hope you will want to join the Club! Monthly membership is currently £30 a month for adults (paid by standing order). PLEASE NOTE, THAT AN INVITATION TO JOIN THE CLUB WILL BE DEPENDENT UPON OUR CAPACITY TO ACCEPT NEW MEMBERS.
Taster sessions for juniors
Anyone aged 18 or under is catered for in the junior section.
At the London 2012 Olympics and again in Rio 2016, rowing was one of the most successful sports, with an impressive number of medals. It was also the most successful rowing nation helping Britain come 3rd in the medal table. And we all love to watch the Annual Boat Races! So why not come and give rowing a try? Trentham Boat Club offers junior taster sessions for outdoor rowing on Trentham Gardens’ lake in the August school holidays and occasionally at other times during the year. Trentham Boat Club is a small club, established about 10 years ago. During that time the Club has built up the junior rowing section, winning national medals on a number of occasions since their first National Race in 2007, winning at international level 3 years running and also medals at junior European championships and Youth Olympics.
Places on our junior beginner sessions are limited and are booked on a first come, first served basis. For more information, please contact Darren Barton, Junior Coach.
