Results 2010

London 12th + 13th March 2010

Two teams from our junior section raced for the first time at the Schools Head of the River Race from Chiswick Bridge all the way to Putney Road Bridge. Nine of our young female rowers aged 14 to 16 raced for the first time in a coxed 8, after rowing four and a quarter miles they finished in 3rd place.  Our boys coxed 4 followed on from the girls lead and also finished in 3rd place. These results are additionally impressive as our team has had little opportunity to train together and has had no opportunity to train on tidal water or on a river the size and complexity of the Thames.

On Friday the racing moved to Dorney Lake. Racing on the venue that is to be home of rowing for the 2012 Olympics the teams put in a valiant showing and raced with passion. Our younger girls team raced against 41 other teams and brought home the Bronze as did our boys team who had competed against 36 other boats. Our older girls team finished in 5th place after an exhausting race that took place during a hail storm.

All this follows on from the amazing success of the team at the Inter-regional Trials in Northwich earlier in March. Success in this championship allows the team to potentially represent the North West Region in the national finals at Nottingham later in the year. Entering one of the largest teams on the day our young members put in strong performances in all races. Following the results we can now say that we have some of the best junior rowers and scullers in the region. Our younger and older junior girls and our junior boys all raced in both rowing and sculling and won in both. Lee Harrison also qualified to represent the region as an individual; this is for the 4th year running a wonderful success for one of our most talented male rowers who hopes to try for the GB team later in the year. One of the best performances on the day was put in by one of our youngest members Jack Kidd who had a fantastic race finishing 2nd against 14 year olds although he is only 13.   Reporter Jayne Fair
