Club History

Trentham Boat Club was founded in the summer of 2004 by Phil Wheeler, Darren Barton and Amy Byron. The formation of the Club was initiated by John Court, who had made enquiries into the use of Trentham Lake for rowing, following the Trentham Awakes’ total ban on motor water sports. It was the increased amount of motorised water sports on the lake that partially led to the relocation of the North Staffordshire Rowing Club to Rudyard Lake several years ago. Some of the more experienced rowers reading this may well have fond memories of North Staffordshire Rowing Club hosting regattas in years gone by!

Rowing on Trentham Lake however has bounced back however, and the new Club is proving to be a major success, we now have more than 40 members. The Club is very lucky to have the continual support of Trentham Awakes where major developments are taking place. Its well worth taking a look at their website (please see our Links page), as without the consistent co-operation of the Trentham Awakes staff, our club would probably not be as strong as it is, and maybe even non existent!

In addition to the support from Trentham Awakes, the Club also owes a big thank you to various other rowing clubs across the country. In the very early days of Trentham, the Club advertised for free boats to help to get us started. Upton Rowing Club and Warwick Rowing Club very kindly donated boats to us, so a BIG THANK YOU to them for their generosity, which gave us such a great start.

If you’d like to come and visit us, you can find us at the old boathouse used by North Staffordshire Rowing Club, which was subsequently inherited by the Water Ski Club. Directions to the Club are available on the Location page.

So there it is. Trentham Boat Club’s relatively short, but we’d say interesting history. To see what’s going on right now, check out the rest of our web site.
