Learn to Row courses
| Our "Learn to Row" courses commence with an dry land instructor demonstration of safety procedures using a very stable training boat (called a Virus): |
| The next image shows a pupil in a training boat. The training boats are initially tethered to dry land until the pupil feels confident enough to be "let loose": |
| After 5 or 6 lessons beginners usually transition from the training boats into a racing boat called a quad. |
Rowing with two oars (correct termed "sculls") is called sculling, and after becoming comfortable in a quad learners can then progress to another discipline called sweep oar (sometimes referred to as rowing). In this discipline only one oar (correctly termed a "blade") is used. If you've watched the University Boat Race then you will have seen a sweep oar boat.
